Beka & Lemoine

The father of Louise Lemoine, the partner of Bêka & Lemoine, the world-famous architecture filmmaking couple, had a serious car accident when the daughter was only ten years old. Then came the long period of rehabilitation and recovery, during which Louise and her father had to visit many different, unremarkable and downright unambitious clinics regarding their architecture.

Many hospitals were just clinical: efficient, clean and filled with the necessary equipment. However, the most important thing was missing: a beautiful environment that supports healing and rehabilitation, with features that help the patients to recover from shocks and serious injuries, with a unique environment and holistic care.

In Finland, we have the Paimio sanatorium designed by Alvar Aalto's office and completed in 1933, the features of which Aalto and the office's architects threw themselves into with full vigor already in the planning phase. The approach taken by the architects and the enlightened client was unique in terms of the actual result The building, the details and its environment. The sanatorium immediately brought the Aalto office to international fame.

Herzog & de Meuron's approach to the design of the Rehab rehabilitation clinic in Basel has been much like that of the legendary Finnish Aalto office. The clinic building, located on the outskirts of Basel, and its architectural solutions and many features have been carefully studied: spaces, light, materials and a green and planted garden-like environment. Above all, it is based on the fact that for a person who is slowly rehabilitating and healing after a traumatic experience, it is also important that there are views from the windows that are pleasant to look at.

After the passing away of Louise's father, Bêka & Lemoine have wanted to make a film that will open the eyes of our eyes and, hopefully, also of the building's customers in the health care sector, as well as members of society, about the meaning of carefully considered and implemented architecture for people.
Buildings, especially hospital and clinic buildings, must not be just a collection of square and cubic meters following the space program that mainly consists of rooms and spaces filled with various tools following regulations and instructions. They definitely must offer something more. They must have high-quality materials and details that are pleasant to touch and look at, without forgetting the well-maintained environment planted with several kinds of plants and trees.
Regarding the Rehab clinic in Basel, things are on track. The clinic favorably differs from numerous similar ones - while also being a trend-setter towards more-than-usual and human-worthy construction. The film is both a beautiful and instructive account of carefully thought-out and executed architecture. It is precisely these filmmakers' own and widely praised way of working that is included.

Even though Rehab is about 20 years old as a building, it is still as good as new. It is also well-maintained and serviced. The therapy is holistic. In addition to physical rehabilitation, a wide range of methods are used, such as art, sculpting, riding a pony, stroking the chickens in the garden, music - not forgetting swimming and rehabilitating with the help of water. The roof of the swimming hall also brings a special and constantly changing light for the pleasure of the patients in the pool. In the summer, a gentle breeze can caress the interior of the building, when the opening windows and balcony doors bring a connection to the outside world. The atrium courtyards inside the outer perimeter of the building are also planted; from the windows you can see, for example, a tiny birch forest.

The film is an important message both for decision-makers and professionals in the health sector and, of course, for all of us. It contains pleasant little details and surprises, and delightful and positive stories about people of different ages gradually recovering from the shocks caused by accidents. There is also a reminder that what is seen when looking out of the window or even through the roof, has great importance for the person resting in bed.
Several films by this famous and widely loved auteur couple have been shown in every round of the Ark Rex architecture film festival. They have been as follows: The Infinite Happiness in 2019, Tokyo Ride in 2021 and Big Ears Listen With Feet in 2023. Separately, in the side theatre the funny and somewhat sad Buto House was screened, in which a dancer from Tokyo builds his own concrete house with a very dance-like trajectory.
